Sticky, glandular hairs on leaves reduce water loss.
A member of the Pea family (Fabaceae) therefore has nitrogen-fixing bacteria in root nodules.
Rhizomes anchor the plant and stabilise the sand. The roots of this plant are long and deep enough to have arrested the plough (in the old days when men were men and women were sprinters) hence the name rest-harrow.
Prostrate growth form protects from strong wind and sand scour.
